Anbernic RG477 V - The modern vertical handheld

As soon as you open the box you immediately notice: this is a premium Anbernic handheld. Of course, we are used to quality from Anbernic when it comes to sub-100 euro handhelds. But lately we at RetroGear have found the more expensive Anbernic device very attractive. The RG477 V is a perfect example.

From the finish to the screen to the performance, this is a handheld clearly meant for enthusiasts who expect just a little bit more.

  • RGB illuminated sticks and subtle lighting effects

Why the Anbernic RG477 V is special

Upon unpacking, you immediately notice the great finish. The RG477 V has an all-glass front plate**, giving the device a luxurious look. The start and select buttons have illuminated text and the analogue sticks are RGB-illuminated, fully adjustable in any colour. You normally only see this kind of detail on high-end handhelds.

The buttons feel good right away. The smooth D-pad, which we often see on more expensive devices, works surprisingly pleasant here and really adds to the premium feel. The 3D Hall joysticks are precise and comfortable, with no worries about stick drift. The shoulder buttons are also clicky and sit in exactly the right place.

The 4.7-inch screen is nothing short of stunning. Thanks to the 4:3 aspect ratio, this handheld is perfect for a huge range of systems. Older consoles in particular look fantastic on this. Think GameCube and PlayStation 2, which look sharp and natural without weird scaling. The 120Hz refresh rate makes not only games, but also navigating menus extremely smooth.

The RG477 V runs on Android 14, which is relatively modern for a handheld. Through the Play Store, you can also just play Android games or use streaming apps. There are already emulators and a frontend available, but we recommend installing something like EmulationStation or Daijisho yourself for the best experience.

In terms of performance, this is not the very strongest handheld around, but it is more than powerful enough for everything up to PlayStation 2, and also runs many Wii and 3DS games surprisingly well.
